History

The facility was built for Norwich Union in the 1960s.[1] It was leased by South Yorkshire County Council from its formation in 1974 until its abolition in 1986.[2] The building, which was referred to as County Hall in the County Council era, was subsequently renamed Central Offices and used by the housing, planning and public services departments of Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council.[2] After being vacated by the Borough Council in 2007,[3] the windows were lit up in various colours as a canvas for a large-scale public artwork in 2009.[4] The building was demolished in November 2015[5] to make way for a temporary market hall.[6] This will in turn will be dismantled to allow for the creation of a new public square in 2020.[7]
