CW Chu College
CW Chu College (敬文書院) is one of the new colleges of The Chinese University of Hong Kong admitting its first students in 2012. It is a small college with a student membership of approximately 300. It is one of the three colleges at CUHK to provide residential accommodation for all its undergraduate members for four years of their studies.

Origin
Founded in 2007, CW Chu College is named after Dr Chu Ching-wen (1906–1996), a prominent industrialist and philanthropist who spent the larger part of his career in Hong Kong. The university decided to perpetuate the memory of Dr Chu by naming a new college after him.
Student life
Fully Residential and Communal Dining
Student of CW Chu College (whether local or non-local) are offered hostel residence for four years / eight academic terms during their normative study period. They also participate in communal dining, where every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, students dine together at the college's Multi-purpose Hall.
High Table Dinner: Students also put on their college gown and attend four High Table Dinners during the school year, where the college invites different speakers to attend, enabling students to benefit from their wisdom and experience from various walks of life.
General Education
The General Education Programme at CW Chu College consists of
- a credit-bearing component (an induction course for Year 1 students and a capstone course for Year 4 students)
- a non-formal component that carries no credit units (required extended orientation for freshmen and communal dining including high table dinners; and voluntary social service)
The induction course is a key component of the first-year experience introducing students to university learning, while the capstone course will allow students to synthesize their academic skills beyond the limits of the major programme, engage with a real-life issue of relevance to society, analyze the factors, constraints and options, and present their findings in a cogent, reasoned and persuasive manner.
Students are expected to learn and participate actively through lectures, tutorials, presentations, group work and the writing of term papers.
Honour Code
Instead of an administration-centred student discipline system, CW Chu College encourages students' practice of self-discipline. All students have to pledge the Honour Code when joining the College.
Students take primary responsibility for managing the Honour Code and dealing with any behaviour that is not consistent with it—with maturity and in a spirit of self-governance.
The Student Honour Code Committee (SHCC), consisting of five student members, is responsible for managing the Student Honour Code.
Mentorship Scheme
Since its launch in the academic year 2012–13, the Mentorship Scheme has been broadening students' horizons of university learning and beyond and enriching their social exposure. Mentees learn from our Mentors—experienced and leading personalities from different walks of life, including our ready network of Chu Scholars—to develop the skills to meet life and career challenges, such as communication skills, interpersonal skills and problem-solving skills.
In 2018–19, the College has a total of 75 mentors and 42 students participating as mentees — a participation rate of around 15% of the CWC student population.
Internship Scheme
Since its launch in 2014, each year some 20–30 internship opportunities exclusive for CWC students have been sourced from around 20 companies/ organisations across various sectors.
Workshops on Getting Ready for the Workplace
The workshops aim to equip senior students with skills for success in job interviews and the world of work, as well as to prompt junior students to start thinking early about the workplace and to point them to available resources.
They include the Workshop on CV Writing, Workshop on Interview Skills, Mock Interviews, Speakers Series—Learn from Professionals and a Fellow Student and Social English Skills for Networking, Group Interview and Internship.
Sports Teams
General Introduction
CW Chu College has various sports team which represents the College to participate in Inter-Collegiate Tournaments, including men's and women's basketball, swimming, soccer, volleyball, badminton, table tennis and tennis team.
Rowing Team (Achievement)
In the recent 15th CUHK Rowing Championships, the College Rowing Team members claimed several awards. The women's team claimed 1st runner up in W1X and W2X respectively, 3rd runner up in W8+ and 1st runner up in the Overall Champion. The men's college team claimed 2nd runner up in M8+.
Service Programme/ Service Team
In line with the College's educational mission and the University's emphasis on non-formal learning as an integral part of whole-person development, CW Chu College organises three major types of service programmes: (1) student-oriented college service and activities; (2) social and community service in Hong Kong; and (3) civic engagement and service learning. In addition to engaging in the activities involved in each programme, participating students' also gain important planning, evaluation and reporting skills, with guidance from College teachers every step of the way.
A CW Chu College Service Team comprising local students and non-local students has been formed since 2012–13, the Team launched a project entitled 'Understanding Socially Disadvantaged School Youths through a Social Service Endeavour' in the summer since 2013. The project aims at promoting the all-round development of students at CWC through engaging students in a social service learning project. With the funding support from D.H. Chen Foundation, selected students from two secondary schools, mainly those who are socio-economically disadvantaged and academically weaker, have been engaged to join the project during summer 2018. The project specifically addresses the importance of understanding the reality and dynamics of social deprivation and value orientations through experiencing a social service learning venture. While making available this opportunity for College students to develop their leadership skills and civic and social awareness, the project also provides an educational experience to build the confidence and mobilize the strength of the disadvantaged school teens.
Student Organisations
Official student organisations in the College includes the Student Union, the Residents' Association and the Student Honour Code Committee.
Other Student Activities
Apart from activities held by the college, students also take initiative and hold a lot of different student activities, such as the CWC Festival and the College orientation camp.
Exchange Opportunities and Overseas Study Trips
Term-Time Exchange Programmes
Inbound Exchange
CW Chu College started receiving incoming exchange students in the academic year 2013–14, and their presence helps create the cultural diversity in the College.
Outbound Exchange
The College offers one-term/ one-year exchange opportunities to students from 10 partner institutions in Australia, Denmark, Hungary, Japan, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States.
There are around 20 one-term exchange opportunities offered exclusively to CWC students in each academic year.
Overseas Study Trips
To provide students with opportunities to explore different cultures, and better understand the social, political and economic developments of China and other countries, the College has arranged various summer study trips to different regions of China since 2014. A few CWC students are also nominated to take part in the Utrecht Summer Programme organised by United College each year which offers students a chance to study European culture, raise their cultural sensitivity and develop a global outlook.
Location, Building and Facilities
Location
The campus is at the Campus Circuit North, close to Area 39.
Building
The building consists of three wings. The living accommodation are on top, for privacy and seclusion. The dining, administrative, teaching and conference facilities occupy the base, for easy access. And the student communal facilities and activities floor is sandwiched in between, to promote interaction.
Facilities
Apart from living quarters for undergraduates, the buildings house dining facilities for the entire membership of the college and purpose-built spaces for tutorials, seminars, and other collegiate activities.
Facilities include activity rooms, café, canteen, computer room, dining hall, fitness room, mini library and reading rooms, seminar rooms, society rooms and TV room.
College Master
Professor Wai-Yee Chan, Pro-Vice-Chancellor/ Vice-President (Strategic Developments), Professor of Biomedical Sciences and founding Director of School of Biomedical Sciences, was appointed Master of CW Chu College, with effect from 1 January 2017.
