Basil Sellers Art Prize

The Basil Sellers Art Prize is a long-term project, with biennial awards. The exhibit tours by collaboration of the Ian Potter Museum of Art, the University of Melbourne, and NETS Victoria (National Exhibition Touring Support Victoria).[1][2] It is aimed at changing Australian’s perception and enjoyment of art and sport.

History

The Basil Sellers Art Prize was envisioned by Baptist Minister Mark Tronson who saw the need for an arts center in Moruya. He found funding from businessman and philanthropist Basil Sellers who would sponsor the Basil Sellers Art Centre which was opened in 2003. The Art Prize was initiated in 2004.[3]

The prize began as a biennial event for artists in the Eurobodalla Shire in 2004. It is run by the Eurobodalla Shire Council. In 2010 the exhibition began to take entries from the Bega Valley, Cooma Monaro, Bombala and Snowy River shires. It has since been established as one of the region’s most prestigious art events, and, in 2019, began to include artists from New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory.[4]

The exhibition’s opening in February 2019 coincided with the opening of the newly-built Basil Sellers Exhibition Centre at Moruya Library. The top prize was $20,000. The top work is placed in Mr. Seller's extensive art collection.[4]
