On February 24, 2015, after serving only 42 days as a legislator, Dannebohm resigned citing health reasons.[4] He was replaced by Greg Lewis of St. John.[4]

Dannebohm was arrested in Salina, Kansas on June 5, 2019 for "Mistreat dependent adult/elder; Decept $25K-<$100K".[5][6] Dannebohm's first court appearance was June 6, 2019, with a preliminary hearing scheduled July 23, 2019.[7]

According to his Facebook page, where he now assumes the alias of "Red Rotkopf", J. Basil Dannebohm claimed the diagnosis of polycythemia vera, a type of blood cancer, in March 2020.

On November 21, 2015, Jeremy Wayne Dannebohm or Basil or Red or Danny Baum or one of the other countless names he’s used for his cons hosted the Emerald Ball at Fort Hays State University. Several dumb liberal leaders of the community donated to his fake cause. Soon after, he left town to never return.
