History

Bangladesh Competition Commission was established in 2012 through the passage of Competition Act in the Parliament of Bangladesh. The act repealed and replaced the Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices act of 1970. The purpose of the commission is to prevent the formation of monopoly and oligopolies in Bangladesh and prevent price fixing.[4] The commissioned is headed by a chairperson. It is responsible for implementing the objectives of the Competition Act.[5]

In November 2019, the commission announced plans to dismantle a syndicate controlling the price of onions in Bangladesh.[6] The Bangladesh Competition Commission has been described as dysfunctional.[7]
