History

AXA PPP healthcare was originally known as the London Association for Hospital Services, set up in 1938 as a private healthcare scheme for people of middle income in London.[2][3] The company was incorporated in 1940 with assistance from the British Medical Association, the King's Fund, and the medical royal colleges.[4] By 1960, it had grown to approximately 121,000 members.

Guardian Royal Exchange Assurance acquired PPP healthcare in 1998 for £435 million and were subsequently themselves acquired by Sun Life & Provincial Holdings, part of the AXA Group, one year later.[5]

Operations

The company has its headquarters in the town of Tunbridge Wells in Kent, England, and is the town’s largest private sector employer.[6]

AXA PPP healthcare provides individual private medical insurance for individuals and business as well as employee assistance programmes. Its regional offices include Leeds, Leicester and Glasgow, and from May 2015, Bristol.

In 2009, Axa PPP International was created, catering for the expatriate international health insurance market.

In March 2012, the company acquired the Bournemouth-based specialist online private medical insurer Health-on-Line.[7]

In May 2015, the company acquired Simplyhealth's private medical insurance (PMI) business.[8]

In September 2016, the company acquired Age UK's personal alarm service.[9] The personal alarm service was renamed PPP Taking Care in April 2017.[10]
