Arthur Ashe Monument

The Arthur Ashe Monument by Paul DiPasquale consists of a statue of Richmond, Virginia native son and tennis legend Arthur Ashe (1943-1993) amongst a sculptural group of children looking up to him and inspired by his reverance for learning (symbolized by the books he holds in one hand) and great athletic talent (symbolized by his tool of the trade a tennis racket which he holds in the other). The monument is placed along Richmond's Monument Avenue, in the United States. The memorial was installed there in 1996.[1] In late June 2020, the statue was vandalized with the phrase "White Lives Matter" during the George Floyd protests. Ashe's family gave the city of Richmond permission to remove the statue if this was needed to protect it from further harm; this was initially misreported as a request to remove the statue.[2]
