Alejandro Badia

Alejandro Badia (born 1963 in Havana, Cuba) is an internationally recognized American orthopedic surgeon, author, and entrepreneur. He was a founder of The Surgery Center at Doral, the Miami Anatomical Research Center, Badia Hand to Shoulder Center, and OrthoNOW, a chain of walk-in orthopedic centers.

Early life and education

Badia was born in Havana, Cuba, and the following year immigrated to the United States and was raised in Elizabeth, New Jersey. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Biological Sciences from Cornell University with a concentration in physiology, and a Doctor of Medicine (MD) from New York University.

Badia completed his general surgery internship and residency at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue. Badia then completed a specialized fellowship for hand and upper extremity surgery at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Badia practiced under Dr. med. Klaus Lowka in Freiberg, Germany.

Medical career

Badia has been in practice as a hand, shoulder and upper extremity specialist since 2008 in Doral, Florida at the Badia Hand to Shoulder Center. Since 2010 he has been Chief Medical Officer of OrthoNOW. Prior to that, Badia was Chief of Hand Surgery at Baptist Hospital, and practiced at the Miami Hand Center in Miami, Florida, between the years of 1995 to 2008.  He has performed surgery on tennis players Giovanni Lapentti, Marcelo Rios, and others. In 2005, he founded and chaired the Miami Hand Course, a didactic and cadaver lab course in arthroscopy and arthroplasty techniques.[1]  From 2009 to 2012, he served as president of the International Society for Sport Traumatology of the Hand.

In July 2019, Badia was named a fellow ad fundem of the faculty of sports & exercise medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland.[2]

Business activities

Badia's career as an entrepreneur and investor began in 2008 with the founding of the Surgery Center at Doral and the Miami Anatomical Research Center. In 2010 he started OrthoNOW and registered the trademark under the umbrella of Badia Hand to Shoulder Center LLC,[3] also founded in 2008.  OrthoNOW provides immediate medical services in the nature of orthopedic care.

In 2020, Badia published his first book, Healthcare from the Trenches.[4]  The book focuses on his experiences as surgeon and entrepreneur, the barriers for healthcare reform, and emphasizes the role of citizens in improving the U.S. Healthcare system.

Philanthropy

Badia has provided philanthropic medical services and performed orthopedic upper limb surgery in Ghana, West Africa at St Joseph Orthopaedic Hospital, Koforidua, Ghana, and for the Guatemala Healing Hands Foundation he performed pediatric hand reconstructions in Guatemala City, Guatemala.[5]
