History

The idea of an Asian women's club competition was first proposed in 2018.[2] The first edition was held as a round-robin with four teams taking part in November 2019, which were the domestic league champions of Associations from Australia, China, Japan and South Korea.[3] It is proposed that there will be a maximum six invited clubs in 2020. In 2021 and 2022, there will be eight invited clubs and by 2023 and 2024, this will grow to a minimum of 12 which will be open to all Member Associations and in 2025, it will be consolidated to 16 teams. The expansion will allow the phased introduction of the tournament as the AFC Women's Champions League, as the female counterpart of the AFC Champions League.[4]
