The Calder Freeway passes by Woodend on the way from Melbourne to Bendigo.

It is a stop on the Vline service between Melbourne and Bendigo, with train service around every hour.

Woodend was the location of the girls school that went for an excursion at Hanging Rock. The recreation reserve is around 10km from the town centre.

Woodend is a major centre, and has major chains with most general good available.
