By train

  • 🌍 Nagymaros–Visegrád Railway Station (Nagymaros–Visegrád Vasútállomás) (the station is about 300 m away from the Nagymaros pier, on the opposite side of the river so you need to take a 5-minute ferry ride across; ferries are scheduled to train arrivals)). From Budapest Nyugati railway station (40-60 minutes, runs every 60 minutes); all stop at Vác. Train timetable.

By bus

  • Take a direct bus at Budapest, Árpád híd bus station to Visegrád (about 80 minutes, runs every 20-60 minutes). Also regularly buses to Esztergom. Volan bus timetable

By boat

  • 🌍 Visegrád Boat Station (Visegrádi hajóállomás), Visegrád, Rév utca (Visegrád center), +36 26 398-296. A more expensive (but much more picturesque) way to get from Budapest (Vigadó tér and Batthyány tér) to Visegrád is an excursion boat toward Esztergom stop here (May-Aug: daily once except Monday, Sep: only Sundays, ticket OW/RW, Ft 2000/3000, 2014) via Vác and an other one operating (Jul-Aug: only Sa Su, +May 31, Jun 1, Sept 27 3½ hours, ticket OW/RW, Ft 2000/3000, 2014) via Szentendre, Leányfalu, Tahitótfalu. Also a hydrofoil service run from Budapest, Vigadó tér by Mahart (weekly twice, only between May and September, one hour). A hydrofoil ticket (OW/RW, 2014) to Budapest Ft 4000/6000, Esztergom Ft 2500/4000.
  • 🌍 Nagymaros ferry pier (Nagymaros-Visegrád RÉV), Magyar utca, +36 26 398344 (ferry info). Boats to Visegrád (at 06:30, and between 08:00 and 21:00 hourly, about 15 min). Schedules may vary due to water, weather and other reasons.

Visegrád - Royal Palace

The reconstructed royal palace building is open to the public, and hosts exhibitions on the history of the royal residence and reconstructed historical interiors. Visegrád, Upper Castle
  • 🌍 Upper Castle (Felső vár, Fellegvár) (about 30-50 minute hike up. Close to Hotel Silvánus). A fortification system constructed in the 1240-50s near the former fortification destroyed during the Mongol invasion.
  • 🌍 Lower Castle (Salamon Torony), Salamontorony utca. The Lower Castle is the part of the fortification system that used to connect the Upper Castle with the Danube. In its centre rises the Solomon Tower, a large, hexagonal residential tower dating from the 13th century. It is very visible when arriving to Visegrád on Route 11.

The ruins of this Roman Empire military camp can be seen on a hill overlooking river Danube. These are the basement walls of a five sided Roman Castrum from the 5th century and the ruins of the governor's castle from the 10th and 11th centuries.

Built in Romanesque style. At the beginning of statehood, Stephen I constituted the castle called Visegrád as county seat. The first parish church of the county was built on the hillside near the castle. The church of the archdeaconry was built on its site after 1063, in King Solomon's time. Adult Ft 200.
Parish Church of St. John the Baptist
  • 🌍 Roman Catholic Church (Keresztelő Szent János Plébániatemplom), Fő utca ~83 (91) (Nagy Lajos utca corner), +36 26 398 006. Mass: Su 09:00, 18:00, M-F 18:00. The baroque-style church was built in the second half of the 1700s. Planned by Schade Lenart. This is a single-nave church with a tower and vaulted interior. The main altar decorated with beautiful color effected picture (moved from the Buda Castle's Sigismund Chapel) a work the 18th-century painter Vicenz Fischer. The pulpit, pews, baptismal pool are also the 18th-century origin.
  • 🌍 Roundtower remains (Kerekbástya, Palotaház?), Visegrád, Fő utca 11-13. (under the staircase in Salamon Torony Street, a little tricky to find, close to Renessaince Restaurant), +36 26 398233, e-mail: . Medieval (Gothic, 16th century) wall remains (maybe the ruins buried back, ask around).
  • 🌍 Roman Catholic Mary Chapel (Római katolikus Mária-kápolna), Visegrád, Fő utca 1. (close to King Matthias Museum), +36 26 398006. By appointment. Built in Baroque style in the first half of 18th century, modified in 1788 and rebuilt in the second half of 19th century. Free-standing, small, front towered memorial chapel. Triangular pediment is above the main facade, behind it is a low, wooden bell tower. A gabled building covered with red tiles. Admission: free.
  • 🌍 Zugfőzde Palinkamuseum (Zugfőzde Pálinkamúzeum), Visegrád, Rév utca 1 (Next to Roman Catholic Church of St. John the Baptist), +36 30 4746660, fax: +36 26 597025, e-mail: . In autumn and winter: W-Su 10:00-18:00; M Tu closed. Here can get information about the era when pálinka distillation was outlawed, from 1919 to 2010. You can also watch two short films show the history of pálinka distilling, and one an interesting compilation about the ingredients of pálinka, including medicinal pálinka. The films reveal exciting secrets about how the ancestors protected themselves against excise men and where they hid their illegally, yet continuously distilled pálinka in order to save their values. By watching the film shot in a "Kisüsti" distillery viewers can learn about the process of preparing "kisüsti" (pot still) pálinka. In the building of the pálinka museum there used to be a grocer's store at around the turn of the century for this reason there is an ice house under the building. Admission: Ft 500/400.

The protected area covers 64,512 ha, 59,362 hectares of which are forest land areas. This woody area in the Danube Bend is cut by the Dera- stream and the Cserepes- valley in two parts. Guided tours in nature protection area. Take a walk to the most highest place in the Pilis Mountains is the 757 m high "Pilis Peak" and enjoy the superb view from Boldog Özséb (Blessed Eusebius) Lookout. - Take one of the cave tours: The rock-bed of the Pilis Hills stretching from Esztergom to Budapest is made up of limestone and dolomite. Because of the basic characteristics of limestone karst formation, the hills are exceptionally rich in caves. Therefore it is not surprising that most of the caves of the National Park can be found in the Pilis Hills. - Some interesting destinations: #1 Moonshine Canyon (Holdvilág-árok) The Holdvilág ditch is a popular tourist destination a water habitat,-a memorial site,- in the Visegrad Mountains Northwest from Pomáz, about six kilometers away.
