Surt
Surt (also Sirt, Sirte) is a city in Libya, best known as Muammar Gaddhafi's hometown. Prior to the civil war of 2011 it was bestowed with a number of governmental edifices subsequently destroyed by NATO aerial bombardment, relentless shelling by NTC rebel forces and then subjected to vandalism and looting of the remains following the killing Muammar Gaddhafi and the suspension of combative activities on 21 October 2011.
WARNING: Surt is a dangerous city and not a tourist destination. Those who are travelling here on business are strongly advised to consult their own government first and have an armed guard with them. Please see the Libya article for country specific travel warnings. | |
