Sumburgh

Sumburgh is a small town in the south of Mainland in the Shetland Islands. Its main attraction is Jarlshof, where you can see 4,000 years of continuous human habitation.

By bus

Bus #6 from Lerwick runs to/from Sumburgh every 1.5-2hrs daily. The bus stops at both the airport and the hotel/Jarlshof. It costs Β£2.70 for a one-way ticket from Lerwick (see timetables for South Mainland).

To get to more than the airport, hotel or Jarlshof, a car would be necessary.

  • 🌍 Jarlshof, ZE3 9JN, ☎ +44 1950 460112. 09:30-17:30. A prehistoric site which covers over 4,000 years of human habitation and structures. It has structures from the Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Viking and Medieval eras. Tickets are available from the visitor center in the summer and the hotel in the winter. Β£5.50/adult, Β£4.40/conces, Β£3.30/child.
  • 🌍 Sumburgh Head. Apr-Sep: daily 11:00-17:30. Oct-Mar: access by prior arrangement only (call +44 1595 694688). Lighthouse, visitor centre and Nature Reserve. Season ticket (valid from Apr-Sep): Β£6 adults, Β£4 concessions.
  • 🌍 Old Scatness (Near the airport). Only open between mid-May till the beginning of September. An Iron Age Broch and Village, discovered when the main road was built in the 70ies.
  • 🌍 Quendale Watermill, Dunrossness, ZE2 9JD (About 4 miles north of the airport. There are signs on the main road A970.), ☎ +44 1950 460969 (when open), +44 1950 460550 (at all other times). Mid-April to mid-October: daily 10:00-17:00; Nov-Mar: closed.
  • Crofthouse Museum, Boddam, Dunrossness, ☎ +44 1595 695057. May-Sep: open daily. Free (donation).
  • 🌍 Spiggie Loch. A Special Protection Area.
