Stećci Medieval Tombstones Graveyards

The Stećci Medieval Tombstones Graveyards is a world heritage site, comprising 28 sites chiefly located in the southeastern half of Bosnia and Herzegovina, though some are in Croatia, Montenegro and Serbia.

Understand

About 60,000 medieval tombstones of the Stećak type has been found in the region, though reportedly more than 90% of these are in a bad condition. Stećak is derived from the South Slavic verb stajati (to stand) and translates to "tall, standing thing". They were erected by many Christian denominations from the 12th to early 16th century, and include illustrations and epitaphs written in the now extinct Bosnian Cyrillic alphabet. In 2016, 28 necropolises with a total of about 4,000 stećci were added to the world heritage list.
