Oberwiesenthal

Oberwiesenthal is a winter sports resort in Ore Mountains in Saxony in Germany. With altitude 914 m above sea level Oberwiesenthal is the highest located "city" (Stadt) in Germany.

Understand

Oberwiesenthal was founded as a mining community during the Era of "Berggeschrey" (sic!) in early modern times. While the mining was mostly over even pre-WWI, winter tourism brought new wealth to this town within easy reach of several slopes. During GDR times Oberwiesenthal was without any doubt the premier winter sports destination of the country as well as a center of the organized training of world class athletes to win gold for the "pesants and farmer state". While winter sports never left the place, it was not unaffected by the collapse of the GDR and with it many former regular visitors trying their luck with the new found travel freedom. However, Oberwiesenthal has since bounced back and even attracts visitors from the other side of the former iron curtain that were few and far between just three decades ago.

Get in

By train

Oberwiesenthal is not served by DB but rather a steam heritage railway (for which you need an extra ticket). The Fichtelbergbahn has departures at least twice daily in either direction even during the off season and takes you from Cranzahl (served by DB) to Oberwiesenthal in roughly one hour.

By bus

Daily the VMS bus line 210 goes from Chemnitz to Oberwiesenthal (journey time: 2h). The DB journey planner has included the bus.

Get around

There is a city bus A, which also goes on the top of Fichtelberg.

gollark: this code is HIGHLY not good.
gollark: Based on my testing, EWO uses about 3% CPU per player...
gollark: This is very not ideal.
gollark: ?
gollark: Okay, so, different idea: core logic in Rust, maybe use an ECS or something, and see if I can have Lua-based scripting?
