Newport (Shropshire)

Newport is a small market town in Shropshire, with a history dating back to the 12th century. It is home to several educational institutions, and has housed a wide range of notable people throughout the centuries. A few of the Medieval buildings remain and the town's main attraction is its wide main street, full of 18th century Regency and Georgian style facades. The already picturesque atmosphere is enhanced in summer with many floral displays. Newport has won a number of Gold medals in the England in Bloom competition.

Visitors information centre. Mo - Sa. The visitors information office is next to the Guildhall, in High Street. Apart from providing tourist information, the place is also a café and sells local crafts. (updated Nov 2015)

On the A 518 between Telford and Stafford near where it crosses the A 41.

Do

Newport Show, Chetwynd Deer Park, TF10 8EU. annually for one day in early July. An agricultural show, with sheep and cattle displays, vintage tractors and show jumping. (updated Nov 2015)

The main street has a number of independent shops, and makes for a pleasant shopping area.

Indoor market. Every Friday and Saturday, the 19th century Market Hall still holds an indoor market. (updated Nov 2015)

Eat

The Fox, Pave Lane , Chetwynd Aston. Serves food from 12 noon to 10pm Mo -Sa. Kitchen closes at 9:30pm on Sundays. A little out of town, this traditional Edwardian pub has lovely outdoor terraces and great views. The food is what you'd expect in a pub, with roast on Sundays. Mains start around ₤12. gollark: I decided to run dendrite, so technically I'm reachable on matrix.osmarks.net now? It's somewhat flaky because dendrite is quite experimental. Synapse would have used waaaay too much RAM.

gollark: Also, instead of consisting of multiple disconnected IRC networks, any servers can federate and participate in rooms together.
