Newport (Isle of Wight)

Newport is the county town (administrative centre) of the Isle of Wight. It is in the centre of the island on the River Medina. It is the second largest town on the island, with a population of 24,000, slightly fewer than Ryde.

In the 1640s King Charles I was imprisoned in this castle whose construction began in the 12th century.
