- DeSoto Bend. Beautiful views of the Missouri River, the marshy timber, and wooded area. You can visit the Welcome Center as well as the site of the Bertrand, a steam boat that hit a snag and sank on the Missouri River before it was dammed and controlled. The Welcome Center contains artifacts from the wreckage, as well as examples of different wildlife that live or have lived along the river and Western Iowa as well as Eastern Nebraska.
Missouri Valley is part of the Loess Hills Region of Western Iowa. The Loess Hills are a large group of fine silt based soil found in few places. Due to the susceptibility of loess soil to erosion, loess can form large bluffs when sections break off. These can be seen throughout various parts of the hills. The bluffs in Missouri Valley Iowa and along Interstate 29 north of Council Bluffs Iowa display this phenomenon.
