An hourly bus links Middleton with Barnard Castle, which has buses to Darlington. Beyond that, you need your own wheels.

🌍 High Force (via B6277). April-Oct 10:00-17:00, Nov-March 10:00-16:00. Impressive waterfall, where the River Tees plunges 71 feet over Whin Sill, the layer of hard rock that elsewhere underpins Hadrian's Wall. A mile downstream is its junior brother, the 18 foot Low Force.

Follow the valley north, over the moors to Alston, then explore Hadrian's Wall.
Going downstream leads to Barnard Castle, with the Bowes Museum, then you join A66: either west to the Lake District or south along A1(M).
