Maiduguri, also known locally as Yerwa, is a large city in Northeastern Nigeria and capital of the Borno State.

Get in

Although named Maiduguri International Airport, the city's airport only handles domestic flights from Lagos, the capital Abuja and Yola.

There have been no passenger services to Maiduguri, the government wants to reestablish the rail link and have made several promises of renewed traffic "soon". Don't hold your breath, though. The old 🌍 Maiduguri railway station is located north of city centre.

Buses are the main form of land transport and ABC Transport amongst others offers overnight from Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and daytime buses from Kano and Jos.

Travelling by car is possible, national roads A3, which continues towards N'Djamena, and A4 passes by here.

Maiduguri is less plauged by sectarian violence compared to cities in central Nigeria but was attacked during the religious violence in 2009 initiated by the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram leaving several dead. Government curfews are quite common.
