Luosto

Luosto is a ski resort in Sodankylä, Finnish Lapland, by Pyhä-Luosto National park. It specialises in husky, reindeer, snowmobile and Santa excursions. It also has an amethyst mine open to tourists.

By plane

Equidistant from Rovaniemi and Kittilä airports, the flight takes little over an hour and the bus trip from either airport about an hour and a half. From here ski buses, taxis or private transfers are available.

By train

Travelling to Rovaniemi from southern Finland (10–12 hours) is easy, also with a car-carrier train. There are bus connections from the railway station to Luosto (SkiBus), which leave immediately following the arrival of the train.

By bus

Luosto has its own SkiBus, which transports holidaymakers to the area year round. During high season the bus drives four times a day and during lower season once a day. Pyhä-Luosto SkiBus is a connection to certain Finnair flights and the timetable may chance accordingly.

  • Lampivaara Amethyst Mine. 1.12–17.4 M–Sa; Jun–Sep daily; Oct Tu–Sa open Mon-Sat. Luosto is also home to the only operating amethyst mine in Europe, which is also open to tourists. Winter (with transport): €27–63/14–28; summer (from Lampivaara café): €18/10.

Do

Luosto offers activities from ice climbing and snow sculpting to reindeeer, husky and snowmobile safaris. The main attractions are reindeer, husky, Santa and snowmobile activities.

Luosto Classic outdoor music event is held annually, with concerts in natural landscapes, such as the Aittakuru ravine or the Ahvenlampi lake.
