Lakes District
Cities
- 🌍 Akşehir — the pleasant hometown of Nasrettin Hoca, a Sufi that is the source of an endless number of satires
- 🌍 Beyşehir — Seljuk monuments and Hittite ruins on the eponymous lake
- 🌍 Burdur — one of the major towns of the region is a short distance inland from Lake Burdur
- 🌍 Eğirdir — pleasant town on the shore of its namesake lake; the northern hub of the St Paul Trail
- 🌍 Isparta — known as the "city of roses", because of the large oil-rose fields around it, this is the largest city in the region
Other destinations
- 🌍 Sagalassos — high over the mountains near the town of Ağlasun is one of the major Roman cities of the region.
- 🌍 Yazılı Kanyon Nature Park (Yazılı Kanyon Milli Parkı) — 10 km southwest of the village of Sütçüler, this national park is centred around a 10-km long, 100- to 400-m deep canyon, surrounded by verdant mountains. Parts of the canyon are dotted by Byzantine-era hermitages (hence the name, which translates "inscripted canyon" in Turkish), and canyoning opportunities galore.
Understand
Scattered by a number of lakes large and small, fresh and salty, this inland region north of coastal Pamphylia over the Taurus mountain chain, is substantially different from, and less travelled than its coastal neighbours to the south.
Lakes District more or less corresponds to the region named Pisidia in ancient times. In modern administrative terms, Lakes District occupies Isparta and Burdur Provinces and the western extension of Konya Province.
