Humenné

Humenné is a city in Eastern Slovakia.

Understand

Historically the area has been a crossing point for armies. The numerous fortifications encountered across the country demonstrate this. The nearest are Castle Brekov (6 km) and Čičava (12 km), both in ruins.

The area is hilly and valley-y, crossed by Laborec river.

By plane

The nearest airport is located in Košice, the second largest city. It's more than an hour away.

By train

Direct night train to Prague and Bratislava. Express and local train to Košice and local train to Prešov, Medzilaborce and Stakčín.

  • 🌍 Humenné station. Main station and terminus of the trains from west.
  • 🌍 "Humenné Mesto" station (At Namestie Slobody). Station in downtown, stop of local train to and from Medzilaborce and Stakčín.

To and from Humenné, it is possible to take a car-train to Prague or Bratislava .

  • Car transport by train. Reservations required. Do not forget the vehicle documents when buying the tickets.

Humenné mansion
  • 🌍 Open Air Museum. A place of popular architecture exhibition and housing the Natural History Museum in Humenné. Fifteen objects representing the wooden folk architecture of the Eastern Carpathian region are exposed. The masterpiece is the church of the Archangel Michael, built entirely of wood without a single nail. Large wooden sculptures were recently added.
  • 🌍 Mansion and Museum of History and National Geography. This Renaissance-baroque style mansion is the symbol of the city. It's the most important architectural monument and one of the largest in the Eastern Slovakia. It was owned by the Andrássy family. In front of the house are the gardens with a pond and sculptures. A museum is located in the mansion. Hungarian kings of portraits, pieces of Celtic-Dacian coins, weapons and even a Chinese salon are presented.
  • 🌍 Namestie Slobody (freedom square). a newly renovated garden square is a prohibited area for vehicles with motors. It has a central aisle and two counter-aisles. At one end, there is the war memorial, and opposite is a small covered market crowded in summer. A musical fountain enlivens its center. At the top of the square stands a monument to the memory of Milan Rastislav Štefánik, General Slovak holder of the Legion of Honour. The square is today lined with modern fronts, with banks and restaurants bars. It is very busy at all times.
  • 🌍 The large park. Centrally located, it's an extension of the Freedom Square. It is composed of rare woody plants. It is adjacent to the mansion and gardens. In its upper part, towards Poľana, was installed the outdoor museum of Vihorlat.
  • 🌍 Brekov castle. The ruins of the castle Brekov stand at nearly 6 kilometers from Humenné, on a hill overlooking a small eponymous village. This Gothic castle was built in the 13th century on the site of an old fortified site of the 8th-9th century. Under the Habsburgs, the castle often changed owners until it was conquered and destroyed in 1644 by the soldiers of Imrich Tököli.
  • 🌍 Janesov castle (Jasenovský hrad).
  • 🌍 Catholic parish church of All Saints (Farský kostol Všetkých svätých).
  • Greek Catholic Temple (Gréckokatolícky chrám Nanebovzatia Panny Márie). Built in 1767 and renovated in 1785 by adding items.
  • Orthodox Church (Pravoslávny chrám Cyrila a Metoda.). This church is dedicated to Saints Cyril and Methodius, two missionary brothers who were sent in 861 by the Byzantine Emperor Michael III to evangelize the Slavic countries.
  • 🌍 Statue of Brave Soldat Švejk (Socha Dobrého vojaka Švejka).
