Stay safe
When mountaineering in snow-capped areas, ensure each member of the group have an ice axe. When mountaineering in general, make sure you have enough warm clothing, plan a route beforehand and stick to it, plan the length of your hiking or climbing to prevent you from being stranded after dark, arrange with somebody to be back by a certain time, so if something goes wrong, rescue teams can find you faster, check the weather forecast and make an emergency plan, just in case.
