Gateshead

Gateshead is a town in Tyne and Wear in the northeast of England, situated south of Newcastle upon Tyne on the banks of the river Tyne.

Get in

Gateshead can be accessed from the north on the Tyne and Wear Metro from Newcastle. The metro goes to the main bus and metro interchange in the town centre. Also from Newcastle there are regular buses, which often carry on to most parts of Gateshead. From all other directions, the bus is the best option.

You can get a train to the suburb of Heworth. Alternatively, there are stations in Dunston, MetroCentre and Blaydon.

By train

The Tyne and Wear Metro provides easy access to several places in Gateshead (namely Gateshead, Felling, Heworth and Pelaw) and continues into South Tyneside and Sunderland in one direction and Newcastle in the other. There is also a national rail station on the Tyne Valley Line for the Metro Centre and bus services.

By bus

Bus services are also frequent. The convenient Quaylink bus service links various popular places in Gateshead and Newcastle. There is a large bus station by the Metro Centre railway station.

By foot

Walking - around the riverside area is pleasant - crossing over to Newcastle.

  • ๐ŸŒ The Angel of the North (about 5 miles from the town centre). Large sculpture by Antony Gormley, erected in 1998. It can be seen when approaching Gateshead from the south on the A1, or by rail.  
  • ๐ŸŒ BALTIC. A fantastic and free modern art gallery on the bank of the River Tyne. There's a cafe on the ground floor, a posh restaurant the top floor and a balcony with stunning views over Gateshead and Newcastle.  
  • ๐ŸŒ The Gateshead Millennium bridge. An architecturally innovative footbridge linking Newcastle and Gateshead Quaysides.  
  • ๐ŸŒ Shipley Art Gallery, Prince Consort Road, โ˜Ž +44 191 477-1495. M-Sa 10AM-5PM, Su 2PM-5PM. Popular art gallery in Gateshead. Relax, unwind and discover the fantastic range of art and design on show in the friendly surroundings of the Shipley. During the last 25 years the venue has become established as a national centre for contemporary craft and has built up one of the best collections outside London, including ceramics, wood, metal, glass, textiles and furniture. Admission is free.

  • ๐ŸŒ The Sage Gateshead. A modern music arena, with two large concert halls, bars, restaurant, reference library. The Sage hosts a wide variety of musical talent, especially classical and folk. The recognizable building was designed by Foster and Partners.

  • ๐ŸŒ Metro Centre (to the West of the town centre, NOT on the Metro line; near Dunston and on the A1), โ˜Ž +44 191 493 0250. One of the largest shopping centres in Europe with many major national and international names such as Marks and Spencer, Debenhams, House of Fraser, Argos, Boots and Apple. Eat

There are many food outlets at the Metro Centre.

Many restaurants can be reached on the Newcastle Quayside from Gateshead by the Millennium Bridge.

Drink

Usually a pub crawl starts around the Quayside, crossing between Gateshead and Newcastle. Common places include Buffalo Joe's and Baja nightclub, but if you prefer something more traditionl and enjoy real ale try The Aletaster in Gateshead or Bridge Hotel, Bacchus, The Bodega or Crown Posada all in Newcastle city centre just over the river.

There are many food outlets at the Metro Centre.

Sleep

The are several smaller B&Bs sporadically placed.
