Gascoyne

The Gascoyne region is more than 136,000 square kilometres large and located in the extreme western coastal region of Western Australia. It abuts the Pilbara to the north and the Mid West to the east and south-east, while the Indian Ocean lies to the west.

Understand

The Gascoyne, Mid-West, Pilbara regions are often conflated into just up north where the distances are long between anywhere, and road travel is dangerous due to sleep inducing monotony of the intervening landscape, the dawn and dusk animals on the roads, and the heat.

The Mid-west coast centres on Geraldton, the Gascoyne on Carnarvon and the Pilbara has a number of significant ports and locations on its coast. It is a long coast from Geraldton to Broome, and in many places, there is no easy access to the coast. It is where the towns or resorts are located that the coast is an easy drive.

Get in

By plane

Skywest and Qantas connect the region with Perth and Broome. There are airports with scheduled services at Learmonth, between Exmouth and Coral Bay, Carnarvon and Monkey Mia.
