Enid

Enid is the county seat of Garfield County, Oklahoma. The population was 47,045 at the 2000 census. It is in the Red Carpet Country region of Oklahoma. Enid was founded during the opening of the Cherokee Outlet by land run in 1893 and was originally a stop along the Chisolm Trail. It has also been the home of Vance Air Force Base since 1941.

Get in

As there is no passenger train or bus service to Enid, you will have to drive, bike or walk to get there. It is located about 70 miles from Oklahoma City. There is a regional airport with connections to Dallas and Oklahoma City, but most travelers find it more convenient and economic to fly into Wichita (ICT) or Oklahoma City (OKC).

  • Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center. Opened in Sept 2009.
  • Kiwanitrain at Meadowlake Park. Memorial Day to Labor Day, M-F 7-9PM, Sa-Su 4-9PM. Train rides and carousel are $1 and other rides are 50ยข.
  • Leonardo's Discovery Warehouse and Adventure Quest, 200 E. Maple, โ˜Ž +1 580-233-2787. T-Sa, 10-5PM, Su 1-5PM. Includes a mini city design especially for children under the age of five, a water area where students will learn about rivers a water flow, a galleon with weather measuring instruments, a research quality telescope, a three-story slide and maze, an obstacle course, a dino-time line, a three-story ball machine, an amphitheater, greenhouse and picnic areas and more. Admission is $7.
  • George's Antique Auto Museum, 508 S. Grand, โ˜Ž +1 580-242-6815. Thursday-Saturday, 10AM-5PM. Features 50 antique automobiles displayed in period settings. Twenty-five of them were made before 1950, and include the only Geronimo automobile known to exist. Auto museum owner, George McCamey, is the owner of the car. Admission is $2.
  • Humphrey Heritage Village, 507 S. 4th St, โ˜Ž +1 580-237-1907. Tu-F, 9-5PM, Sa & Su, 2-5PM. Victorian style home that has been refurbished. It is known as the "Glidewell Home." The original land office where pioneers lined up to file their claims after the great land rush of 1893 that opened the Cherokee Strip Outlet to settlement. Enid's oldest church building and an original one-room schoolhouse are also located in the village. Free Admission.
  • ๐ŸŒ Railroad Museum of Oklahoma, 702 N. Washington, โ˜Ž +1 580-233-3051. Tu-F, 1-4PM Sa, 10-1PM, Su, 2-5PM. Featuring six cabooses from railroads that have served Enid (Union Pacific, BNSF, Grain Belt), a baggage car, motor cars, a three-dome tank car, and a 50-ton engine. Railroad memorabilia is displayed inside the museum building. Admission by donation.

You may witness small businesses play a game of "musical chairs", as each week there seems to be a new business popping up somewhere in place of an older one.

  • Fat & Skinny's. Good sandwich shop with a good atmosphere.
  • Lot-A-Burger, 310 W. Willow, โ˜Ž +1 580 237-1471. Nothing but the best burgers! Voted #1 Burgers in Enid by local newspaper at least 3 times. A little pricey for just a burger, but well worth it..
  • Chicaro's. Best Steak Fingers in the world. Period. Don't forget the block of cheese with that.
