Carndonagh

Carndonagh (Irish: Carn Domhnach) is a market town located more or less in the centre of Inishowen and the main gateway for Malin Head.

This is a close-knit community that has served the local farming area for centuries. Nevertheless they are friendly and welcoming, if a little cautious, with strangers.

By plane

There is a small airport at Derry. Otherwise Belfast and Dublin offer the nearest major airports.

The nearest railway station is in Derry.

By car

Carndonagh has road links to most of Inishowen. The main routes to Carndonagh would be via Derry in Northern Ireland or Buncrana further south in Inishowen.

By bus

Lough Swilly Buses run from Derry and Buncrana.

See

St Patrick's Cross (Donagh Cross) on the southern side of the town is reputed to date from the time of St Patrick.

The Catholic church on top of the hill in the centre of town dominates the local landscape.

As befits a market town, shops mostly serve the local community. There is a regular farmers' market if you want to buy sheep or cattle!!

There are plenty of pubs in the town – the farmers need somewhere to celebrate getting a good price for their livestock!
