  • Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, 1/2 mi (0.8 km) north of Big Pine, go east on State Highway 168 for 12 mi (19 km). Turn left on the White Mountain Road, clearly signed to the Bristlecone Pine Forest. Follow this paved road 10 mi (16 km). mid-May through mid-November, depending on snow levels. This forest consists of bristle cone pines which grow to extremely old age. The oldest tree, Methuselah, is around 4,800 years old. The visitor center burned down in September of 2008 and has been reconstructed. Visitors should be prepared with their own food and water.
