Beverley has a good variety of food, with a large number of tea-rooms and cafes, most of which are worth a visit. They vary in price, but by and large the price does reflect the quality. Cavanagh's tea-room on Butcher Row for example has very good breakfasts, but they will cost getting on for a tenner. The tea-cosy by the Minster is notable for a comfortable conservatory. TC's Patisserie on Lairgate offers genuine freshly prepared tarts, quiches etc.; all under the guidance of Thiery.

There are some good restaurants;

  • White's Brasserie. on North Bar Without - devoted to food, no music, definitely no TV, and surprisingly good value with a fixed menu at under £20 a head, though the wines are pricey. Modern British with a French flavour
  • Seraglio. Very nice plainly decorated Turkish restaurant in a small courtyard off Lairgate, the courtyard has a selection of Mediterranean trees including a Fig and a Pomegranate. Food is well prepared and fresh, expect to pay £20 - 35 per head with beers
  • Cerutti 2. in what was the Station buffet. Specialises in fish, though there is a wide range of entrees to suit all tastes. They have a specials menu; just under £50 for two including a bottle of house wine. You will have to book well in advance as this place is very popular
  • Muang Thai (on Lairgate). small plainly decorated Thai restaurant. The food seems to be freshly prepared on the premises. Prices are fairly high, expect to pay over £50 for two with beers, more if you want wine

And many others, including some chains such as Pizza Express and upmarket burgers at Ranch.

Drink

  • The White Horse or Nellie's is a 17th-century pub that attracts numerous visitors, many from far away.
  • The Sun Inn on Flemingate is 16th Century with a half-timbered front and exposed woodwork inside. Very good beers, music and food on particular evenings
  • The Green Dragon on Saturday Market has good beers and usually has a range of guest ales
  • The Foresters on Beckside is an ordinary workaday pub with good beers, usually including interesting guests, and surprisingly good cheap food early evenings - locally sourced meats
