Abyei

Abyei is a town that is administered by Sudan and claimed by South Sudan. It has been one of the flashpoints in the ongoing conflict between the two countries since the Sudanese Civil Wars, as it is disputed between the two countries.

WARNING: Abyei is at the center of the low-level conflict between Sudan and South Sudan. Best avoided by most travellers at this time.

The town is heavily disputed between South Sudan and Sudan. There's not much reason for travelers to visit, and it's probably not the safest place to be either.

Abyei was traditionally inhabited by people of the Dinka ethnic group. In the late 2000s, the Second Sudanese Civil War took its toll and most of the Dinka have fled the town, which has now been occupied and razed by northern Sudanese forces.

Sudan's B38 Highway passes through Abyei Town.

It is highly advised that you travel in an armored car. Do not wander the streets alone.
