Background and production

Citizen formed in 2009 with members located in Michigan and Ohio.[11] The group released a handful of singles and an EP, Young States (2011).[11] In March 2012, it was announced the band signed to Run for Cover.[12]

Citizen entered Studio 4 with producer Will Yip (Title Fight, Circa Survive, Braid), in February 2013, to record their first debut album, Youth.

Composition

Youth has been described as emo,[2][4][6][13][14][15] grunge,[5][6][13][14][15] indie rock,[4][13] punk rock,[4][14] pop punk[15][16] and post-hardcore.[2] It drew comparisons to Brand New, Basement,[3] the Story So Far, Transit,[4] Title Fight and Daylight.[6][5] Lyrically, the release discusses the themes of coming-of-age[4] and adolescent angst.[7] The opening track "Roam the Room" starts with a hard rock guitar part that recalled Brand New;[4] it overall was reminiscent of Jar (2013)-era Daylight.[6] The track saw frontman Mat Kerekes switch from gentle singing to more abrasive vocals,[4] backed by intense guitar work.[3] "Sleep" was called a mix of Seahaven and Manchester Orchestra;[6] it talks about having sleepless nights.[8] "Sleep" and following track "How Does It Feel" were a combination of emo and grunge.[7] "The Night I Drove Alone" begins slowly and eventually builds to a crescendo.[6] "Your Head Got Misplaced" was compared to R.E.M.; "Sick and Impatient" was an alternative rock track in the vein of Placebo that bordered on pop rock.[8]

Release

In March and April 2013, the group supported the Story So Far and Man Overboard on their co-headlining US tour, dubbed The Suppy Nation Tour.[17] On April 22, Youth was announced for release, revealing its artwork.[18] On May 13, "The Summer" was made available for streaming. In addition, the album's track listing was revealed.[19] On May 20, a video of behind-the-scenes footage during recording was posted online.[20] On May 29, "Roam the Room" was released as a free download via Alternative Press.[21] Due to Youth leaking, the group made the album available for download on June 4 for $5.[22] It was formerly released on June 11 through Run for Cover.[18] On the same day, a music video was released for "The Summer".[23]

Youth received a UK release on July 14. Following this, the group embarked on a UK tour with Diamond Youth and Headroom.[24] In October, the group performed at The Fest.[25] In November and December, the band went on tour with Polar Bear Club, Diamond Youth and Sainthood Reps.[26] On December 4, a music video was released for "How Does It Feel", directed by Rob Soucy.[14] In March and April 2014, the group supported The Wonder Years on their North American headlining tour.[27] The following month, the group appeared at Skate and Surf festival.[28] In September and October, the band went on a headlining US tour with support from You Blew It!, Hostage Calm, Praise and True Love.[29] The tour included an appearance at Riot Fest.[30] On October 6, a music video was released for "Figure You Out". Directed by Ryan Mackfall, it was filmed during their UK tour.[31]

gollark: There's also that stupid DRM blob my browser needs for "encrypted media extensions", though I have that turned off.
gollark: I don't think there's open-source firmware available for my... SSD, keyboard, smartcard reader thingy, and whatever else.
gollark: With my actual x86-based computer, I mostly control it, except... lots of the firmware, the intel management engine, and the BIOS.
gollark: Mine does too, but it has an annoying screen complaining about the bootloader being unlocked on boot.
gollark: Android phones have the same issue (iOS too, more so, but I have an android one so I'll complain about it) - you can barely do anything to it unless you root it, and even that's a hassle and still has limitations.
