As a "Best Of" anthology, all the stories in this book previously appeared either in science fiction magazines, original short fiction collections, or online publications. Its importance lies in that it, and the competing Year's Best Science Fiction anthology, are representative of the best short science fiction of the year.

Contents

The book itself, as well as each of the stories, has a short introduction by the editor.

gollark: Oh, nether roof bases are fun too.
gollark: We have Chorus City, but it doesn't have *skyscrapers*, and no - no water.
gollark: Actually, just build in the End?
gollark: Well, in that case, you will somehow need to remove the lowest layer of bedrock and make your building go down to there.
gollark: You can't become the tallest unless you- count underground and dig down to bedrock- remove the dirt around your tower and then build it as far down as possible- somehow manage to exceed the height limit
