Background

The Royal College of Art Library, London

The practice initially focused on housing projects, particularly for organisations that support people with special needs, such as the Aids and Housing Trust and the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.[2] Since winning a competition in 1995 to design the Royal College of Art's library in central London, Wright & Wright have built up a portfolio of projects in higher education and cultural buildings, including the Longwall Library for Magdalen College, Oxford and the Women's Library[3] in London. Through this work the practice has developed a design expertise in archives, libraries and galleries, and has delivered projects for institutions such as the Victoria and Albert Museum and the National Gallery.[4]

The practice is led by three partners: Clare Wright, Sandy Wright and Stephen Smith.

Clare Wright studied at the Mackintosh School of Architecture in Glasgow where she was tutored by Andy MacMillan and Isi Metzstein. She was the Design Manager at Circle 33 Housing Trust before co-founding Wright & Wright. She was an RIBA Vice-President and sits on the English Heritage/ CABE Urban and Design Review Panels,[5] responsible for advising CABE on Crossrail. She was awarded an MBE in 2005 for services to architecture.[6]

Sandy Wright studied at the Mackintosh School of Architecture, where he was taught by Isi Metzstein, whom he went on to work for at Gillespie, Kidd & Coia. At Gillespie, Kidd & Coia he worked on Robinson College in Cambridge and the library at Wadham College, Oxford.[7] Blue Boar Court at Trinity College, Cambridge and work on Worcester College, Oxford were both undertaken while he was a partner at MacCormac Jamieson Prichard and Wright.[8] He has tutored and lectured at over 20 schools of architecture in the UK, including at the Mackintosh School of Architecture and Newcastle University, as well as being a competitions assessor for both the RIBA and the RIAS.

The practice is currently working on nationally significant projects at Lambeth Palace[9] and the Geffrye Museum, London.[10]
