Route description
WIS 137 begins at a four-way intersection with US 2 and a local road in eastern Bayfield County west of Ashland.[2] It heads east from here, then turns northeast until it reaches a Canadian National railroad track. The highway turns east here to parallel the railroad, which it follows until its eastern terminus. After turning east, WIS 137 crosses South Fish Creek and enters Ashland County and the City of Ashland. The highway becomes Golf Course Road within Ashland; the name comes from the Chequamegon Bay Golf Club, which the road passes. WIS 137 intersects WIS 112, locally known as Sanborn Avenue, at a four-way intersection in Ashland. It becomes 6th Street after WIS 112 and continues east until its eastern terminus at a four-way intersection with WIS 13.
History
WIS 137 was originally designated in 1923 as a short highway between WIS 39 and WIS 23 in Iowa County. This route became a county road in 1934, and the WIS 137 designation was reassigned to another route in Iowa County between WIS 80 in Avoca and WIS 130 in Lone Rock. WIS 137 remained on this route until 1968, when it was replaced by WIS 133. The WIS 137 designation was placed on its current route in Ashland in 1971; it replaced WIS 112, which was rerouted in the area.
Major intersections
The entire route is in Ashland, Ashland County.
