William Douglas, 1st Earl of Queensberry

William Douglas, 1st Earl of Queensberry (c. 1582 – 8 March 1639/40) was a Scottish noble.

He was the eldest son of James Douglas, 8th of Drumlanrig and his wife Mary Fleming. He inherited his father's title, as 9th Laird of Drumlanrig, in October 1615.[1] Between 1616 and 1623, he held the offices of Provost of Lincluden, Sheriff of Dumfries, and Justice of the peace for Dumfries.[2] On 1 April 1628 he was created lord Douglas, of Hawick and Tibbers, viscount Drumlanrig.[3]

He was created the first earl of Queensberry in 1633, originating the still-extant Queensberry titles.[1] On his death he was succeeded in his titles by his son James.[3]

He married Isabel Kerr, daughter of Mark, Earl of Lothian in 1603. They had issue:[3]

gollark: I got bored and started looking at university league tables and course lists and stuff recently.

gollark: Anyway, I *did* GCSEs this year, I *am doing* A levels next school year and for two years after that, and I *am probably* going to university of some sort after that (I've been overresearching that out of böredom).

gollark: Schools are, you understand, not actually very efficient at teaching some people. Or possibly most.

gollark: GCSEs are the first actual qualification things and you study for 2 years for them. I did... I think 11 or so? I probably should know, but stuff like maths and further maths and English literature/language were taught together at school.
