Vice Chief of Space Operations
The vice chief of space operations (VCSO) is a planned statutory office of held by a general in the United States Space Force. The general will directly support the chief of space operations (CSO) by serving as a member of the Joint Requirements Oversight Council (JROC) and would also operate with the full authority of the chief of space operations during the CSO’s absence. A general officer, according to a congressional report detailing the proposed structure of the Space Force, would be appointed by the president, pending United States Senate advise and consent, upon the recommendation of the U.S. Secretary of the Air Force pursuant to her authority under the United States Code (10 U.S.C. § 9014).[1] The VCSO would be the second-highest position in the U.S. Space Force equivalent to other services' Vice positions.[2][1]
On August 2020, Lieutenant General David D. Thompson was nominated to fill such position. He currently serves as the vice commander of the U.S. Space Force, a position he retained with the redesignation of the Air Force Space Command as the United States Space Force.[3][4]
