History

Vari started as a sit-stand product from Gemmy Industries, a novelty and décor company.

In 2012, McCann noticed that a colleague had put his computer on top of a cardboard box. That co-worker wanted to stand and work to relieve his sciatic nerve pain. McCann searched for standing desks online but found products that were either too expensive or difficult to assemble. Soon after building a prototype, more wanted one. The standing desk later turned into a full-fledged product once people outside Gemmy heard about it.

By 2013, McCann made Vari into its own entity. Since the company launched in 2013, Vari has grown from two employees and one standing desk to more than 300 employees.[1]

One of the company's products, the Electric Standing Desk 60x30, was featured on the HBO comedy series Silicon Valley.[1]

gollark: Personally, I suspect the thought process is something like:- "Hmm, CC does not look like [Windows/MacOS/whatever the user was brought up on and uses lots]"- "I must make it like this! This is an obvious usability improvement."- "Clearly nobody has thought of this already or, as it's obviously better, it would be used everywhere."
gollark: And some bundled programs, primarily other people's.
gollark: The majority of "OS"es are glorified startup screens maybe with a GUI or something. This is *not useful*.
gollark: SquidDev explained it here: https://gist.github.com/SquidDev/6fa444798bbe01f4068bf82a76ac273f
gollark: "OS"es are one of CC's most popular projects, despite most of the implementations of them delivering near-zero value.
