About Book
This book is an encyclopedic work based on the names of the companions of the Prophet Muhammad, arranged in alphabetical order. This title relies on mostly four other works such that of Ma'rifat al-Sahabah by Abi Na'im, al-Isti'ab fi Ma'rifat al-Ashab by Ibn 'Abd al-Barr, Ma'rifat al-Ashab, and al-Dhayl 'ala Ma'rifat al-Ashab, both by Ibn Mandah. Islamic scholars regard it as an informative source.[5]
Scholars have written the following:
- Ibn Hajar notes in Taqrib, He was truthful, but he was habitual of connecting disjointed narrations and not mentioning his sources.[6]
- ‘Abdul Barr writes in al Isti’ab, His ahadith have contradictions in the asanid and cannot be established.[7]
- Al Dhahabi states, Ibn Sa’d said, “He narrated many ahadith, but his ahadith cannot be used as proof, because he does not mention his source in many instances. He did not meet the Sahabah, and most of his companions also do not mention their sources.[8]
Edition
This print is in one thick volume expanding well over 1600 pages. It is well-edited but has barely any footnotes.
