Pearl was built as a private motorboat of the same name in 1912 by W. H. Saunders. On 23 August 1917, the U.S. Navy acquired her from her owner for use as a section patrol boat during World War I. She was commissioned as USS Pearl (SP-1219) and assigned to "special duty."[1]

Pearl was returned to her owner on 23 December 1918.

Notes

  1. The Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships http://www.history.navy.mil/danfs/p3/pearl.htm says she was assigned to "special duty" without further explanation.
gollark: Asking people to move channels *never* works.
gollark: It's not like you can independently prove *everything*.
gollark: I mean, search engines are good and getting better, but they're not... information genies yet.
gollark: You can't use search engines to look up stuff *that* vague.
gollark: You can't really just force them to add "also the world might not be real" to the uncertainties, and it would be annoying and unhelpful.
