History

The Canadian expansion of Toys "R" Us began operation in 1984. The current company is headquartered in Concord, Ontario.

Bankruptcy of parent company and buyout by Fairfax

Their parent company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on September 18, 2017. On February 28, 2018, it was reported that the company was exploring retaining its stronger Canadian operations, and the divestiture of some of its corporate-owned stores to franchises (leaving approximately 200 in a downsized chain).[2] Toys "R" Us Inc. later announced in March that all U.S. locations would be closed.[3][4] It was later sold to Fairfax Financial on June 1, 2018,[5] and currently the chain comprises 82 stores which continue to operate under the Toys "R" Us name following the liquidation of Toys "R" Us in the United States, which led to a comeback in December 2019 for the holiday season and when Tru Kids Inc took over the US divison.
