Footnotes[1]

History

The suburb of Tonsley was created on 27 January 2017 by dividing the suburb of Clovelly Park in half. The southern part of the suburb was separated from Clovelly Park and named Tonsley at that time.[2][3]

Named after England's Tonsley Hall,[4] it includes the former vehicle assembly plant, which was often called Tonsley Park. The Chrysler Australia car plant was opened in 1964. The factory was taken over by Mitsubishi Motors Australia Limited (MMAL) in 1980 and closed in 2008.[5]

The former vehicle factory is being developed with facilities including campuses of TAFE and Flinders University as well as residential development.[4]

Tonsley is served by the Clovelly Park and Tonsley railway stations. Clovelly Park station was originally going to be named Tonsley (and the current Tonsley station to be named Sturt), but the name was changed to Chrysler Park prior to opening due to the presence of the Chrysler Australia car plant. The name changed to Clovelly Park station in 1984.
