Tigranakert (Nakhijevan)

Tigranakert (in Armenian Տիգրանակերտ) or Tigranavan (in Armenian Տիգրանավան) is one of the four cities established by Tigranes the Great, emperor king of Armenia carrying his name. The one at Nakhijevan served as a sitting city for Tigranes' sister Tigranouhi.[1]

Tigranakert/Tigranavan was founded in the 1st century B.C. near Aparan or Aparank (in Armenian Ապարան or Ապարաններ or Ապարանք).[1] Also known as Bənəniyar (Bananiyar), it is located in Julfa District in Nakhijevan, present-day Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, Azerbaijan.
