The University of Texas Marine Science Institute

Established in 1941, The University of Texas Marine Science Institute (UTMSI) is Texas’ first permanent marine laboratory. The Institute is part of The University of Texas at Austin but is located in Port Aransas, Texas. UTMSI has 15 faculty members[1].

Mission

The Marine Science Institute is dedicated to understanding and sharing our knowledge of the world's oceans and coasts - critical ecosystems for the health and future of humanity and the earth.

History

UTMSI was the first marine laboratory on the Gulf Coast, established in 1941.

Academics

  • Fish Physiology and Ecology - investigation of living marine resources, especially finfish and shellfish
  • Ecosystem Dynamics - integrated diverse fields of science analyzing how plants, animals, water, air, minerals and mankind interact in coastal ecosystems.
  • Biogeochemistry - research on foodwebs and understanding the delicate balance and flow of nutrients that are crucial for sustaining marine ecosystems
