Plot

Tom Lee gets drawn into this world against his wishes when his eccentric grandmother turns out to be the guardian of the phoenix egg. When his grandmother perishes in battle and is spirited away in a ghost cart, Tom must apprentice with an unlikely mentor - a tiger, Mr. Hu - to learn ancient magic to protect the egg with an unlikely band of exotic creatures, each representing a different sign of the Chinese zodiac, who can morph into human form while retaining their innate animal characteristics.

Production

In October 2008, Cartoon Network announced the live-action animated film adaptation of Laurence Yep's book with a script by David Magee[2] with Rainmaker Entertainment contracted for the animation for the film.[3] The project was cancelled since Cartoon Network stopped developing live-action projects.

In March 2019, Paramount Pictures announced a fully animated film adaptation to be produced,[4] with Carlos Baena set to make his directorial debut with Magee and Harry Cripps writing the script and Raman Hui, Jane Startz, and Kane Lee producing the film adaptation.[5] Production was done remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic.[6]

Release

The film was originally scheduled to be released on February 11, 2022,[4] but due to the issues faced by the film industry as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was delayed until February 10, 2023.[7]
