The Tape Dust

The Tape Dust is an EP released by Pretty Balanced in 2005. It's a raw, acoustic set, that varies greatly from Pretty Balanced's usually more produced, electronic sound. The first two tracks feature Judith Shimer on piano and vocals, and Forest Christenson on violin. The last three tracks are Shimer solo on piano and vocals.[1]

The second track, Permanent Guest, is the "chill" version of a song that first appeared on Pretty Balanced's demo album, Free Public Consumption, and later on the album Icicle Bicycle. The fourth track, Pieces, later appeared in a more produced manner on Conical Monocle.

The final track is about a friend of Shimer's, Sarah Krause, who died suddenly on September 13, 2004 at the age of sixteen. In the song, Shimer talks about reflecting on their friendship a year after Krause's death.[2][3]
