The Shan Van Vocht

The Shan Van Vocht, a phonetic rendering of the Irish phrase An tSeanbhean Bhocht ("The Poor Old Woman," a traditional name for Ireland)[1] is a novel by James Murphy detailing the Irish Rebellion of 1798. The protagonist of Seamus Deane's Reading in the Dark finds "something exquisite in [its] blend" of "bad weather . . . [and] fire, implied danger [and] a love relationship".[2]
