Production

In a 2018 interview with Rue Morgue, writer-director Sam Wineman described his conception of the film: "I wanted to share my personal journey with mental health, but allegorically."[9] Wineman wrote the role of Hattie specifically for Alaska Thunderfuck.[9] Regarding Lisa Wilcox having been a member of the film's cast, Wineman stated that he "Had my fingers crossed for Lisa. Luckily, she loved the script."[9]

Release

The Quiet Room premiered at the Nevermore Film Festival in February 2018, where it won the Jury Award for Best Long-Form Narrative Short.[3] The film was later screened at the LGBT-oriented film festival Outfest on March 11, 2018.[4] In June 2019, the film was officially uploaded to Facebook and YouTube by Crypt TV.[5][6] Speaking about the association between the film and Crypt TV, Wineman said that "I'm really excited that The Quiet Room is airing on CryptTV because their fans aren't just spectators – they are a smart and active community. [...] When I met with CryptTV, they made it clear to me that they stand by how important it is to bring diverse voices to their platform and reach fans who have been asking for exactly this kind of content. I couldn't be more excited to team up on this."[5]

The Quiet Room was made available for streaming on Shudder on July 29, 2019.[2]
