The Artifice (magazine)

The Artifice is an independent long-form online magazine that focuses on visual arts and other "unique topics."[6][5] The website is collaboratively built and maintained by writers, with all articles peer-reviewed by other writers,[7] with discussions about various types of visual media.[8][9] Students are often contributors to the magazine,[10][11] which uses a WordPress platform.[12] Currently, the University of Nebraska - Lincoln,[13] Middle Tennessee State University,[14] University of Chicago,[15] and University of Lethbridge[16] promote The Artifice as a writing opportunity for students.

History and profile

The Artifice was founded in October 2009[3] by Misagh Alami.[2] It grew from 1 million fans on Facebook in December 2009[17] to 2.5 million fans in February 2010.[18] By 2012, the site boasted about its 4.5 million followers on Facebook.[6] In 2014 and 2015, Alyson Burston, representing the publication, sent emails to University of Florida and George Mason University listservs, asking for student contributors to the magazine.[19][20] Around the same time, the Reed College Linguistics Department,[21] and Rowan University[22] shared promotional messages while the departments of James Madison University[23] and Savannah College of Art and Design[24] encouraged students to write for the publication. One individual, Jonathan Leiter, even described his experience writing for the magazine.[25] Since then, Marymount Manhattan College highlighted a student published in the magazine,[26] while Villanova's English Department,[27] University of New England,[28] and University of Massachusetts Amherst Art Department,[29] encouraged their students to write for it. In 2018, Andrew Berryhill wrote an article for the libertarian Foundation for Economic Education which prominently cited the publication.[30]

The magazine also has spinoff sites for films, games, and anime, titled "Screenfice,"[31] "Gamefice,"[32] "Animefice"[33] respectfully.
