Test to Destruction

"Test to Destruction" is a novelette by Keith Laumer from Harlan Ellison's science fiction anthology Dangerous Visions (1967). It also appears in A Plague of Demons and Other Stories, a posthumous Laumer omnibus edited by Eric Flint and published in 2003.

Plot

The leader of a rebellion is questioned in a mental torture device chair. An alien mind probe finds him as the most powerful mental emission from the planet at the time. The aliens try to test him to destruction.

gollark: In the old times™, even things like pathfinding were considered AI, I think. Also things like chess engines and primitive theorem provers.
gollark: It's been said that AI is just anything we can't do nicely yet, which seems accurate.
gollark: The largest bases I've designed are large main-bus-based ones with dedicated offload sites for things like green circuits.
gollark: It's basically just training an agent to play Minecraft using the normal human keyboard/video/mouse interface.
